Abolishing Operation (AO)

A type of MO that decreases the effectiveness of a reinforcer.

An Abolishing Operation makes a consequence less valuable. Satiation is the most common example. If you just ate a large meal, food no longer acts as an effective reinforcer.

This abolishing effect temporarily suppresses behaviours that typically produce food. You use AOs proactively in interventions. Providing free access to attention (NCR) acts as an AO, abolishing the value of problem behaviour maintained by attention.
