Stimulus Control

When a behaviour occurs more often in the presence of a specific stimulus than in its absence.

Stimulus control describes how the environment governs our actions. A behaviour falls under stimulus control when it reliably occurs when a specific cue is present, and does not occur when the cue is absent.

Stopping your car falls under the stimulus control of a red traffic light. In teaching, establishing strong stimulus control ensures that a learner performs the right skill at the right time and place.
