Printable Behaviour Scatterplot Grid

A behavior scatterplot is a visual mapping tool used to identify patterns of behaviour in relation to times of day or specific subjects. This portrait-oriented layout features 30-minute intervals and day columns, designed for marking tallies directly in each cell to record exact frequencies over a week.

How to Use This Template

  1. Fill out the student's name, target behavior definition, and start date.
  2. Write dates or days of the week across the column headers (e.g., Monday through Friday).
  3. Whenever the target behavior occurs, record a tally mark (e.g., |) inside the box corresponding to the current time interval and day.
  4. Leave the block blank if the behavior did not occur during that interval.
  5. Sum the tallies at the end of each day or subject interval to calculate total frequency counts.
  6. Analyze the sheet after 1-2 weeks to identify horizontal clusters (high-frequency times) or vertical clusters (high-frequency days/routines).

Clinical Best Practices & Tips

  • Define behavior clearly: Ensure all staff agree on what constitutes a single occurrence before starting tallies.
  • Prompt logging: Set subtle vibration alerts for staff to record any occurrences right at the end of each period.
  • Track patterns: Look for time clusters to align proactive antecedent interventions, like scheduling movement breaks before high-tally periods.
