A token board is a form of token economy: the learner earns tokens for a target behaviour and exchanges a full board for a chosen reward. Tokens act as conditioned reinforcers — they bridge the gap between the behaviour and a reward that can't always be delivered straight away.
Decide what the learner is working for and make sure it is genuinely motivating. Set an achievable number of tokens so success comes quickly at first, then increase it gradually. Award each token immediately and pair it with specific praise. When the board is full, deliver the reward straight away.
