Functional Analysis (FA)

An experimental assessment procedure that systematically manipulates antecedents and consequences to isolate the maintaining function of a behaviour.

A Functional Analysis (FA) is the gold standard of behavioural assessment. Unlike descriptive FBAs (such as interviews or direct observations), an FA involves experimentally manipulating environmental variables in structured test conditions (e.g., Attention, Demand, Tangible, and Alone) compared to a control condition (Play).

By systematically presenting triggers and temporarily reinforcing the target behaviour in controlled periods, practitioners can observe under which condition the behaviour spikes. This empirical proof isolates the exact function maintaining the behaviour, allowing for highly targeted and effective Behaviour Intervention Plans (BIPs). FAs should only be conducted by trained professionals under safe, controlled parameters.
